Synovial Joints
Glinding / Plane Joints
-
-
Example; Carpal joints in wrist, adjacent vertebrae in the spine, the tarsal bones of the ankle
-
-
Pivot Joints
-
-
Uniaxial: 1 plane of movement; transverse plane of movement (parallel flat surface to the ground, dividing us into upper (cranial) & lower (caudal) parts)
Example, in neck allowing head to shake 'no'. There is an axis, which remains the same, and an atlas, which is on top of the axis and moves. Also in the forearm, near the elbow and wrist, aloowing the forearm to twist and rotate
Hinge Joints
-
Example; elbow, knee, interphalangeal (upper finger knuckles, 2 in fingers, 1 in thumb)
-
Flexion and extension; bicep curls, knee extension
Uniaxial: One plane of movement; sagittal plane (median plane, slices body into right half and left half. Vertical plane passing through the body)
Ellipsoidal Joints
-
Example; Metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP) Knuckles in fingers, the metatarsophalangeal joints (where the toes meet the foot)
-
Convext surface sat on concave surface (like a grapefruit sat in a bowl). More oval than ball and socket joint, which doesn't allow for rotation
Saddle Joints
-
-
Biaxial: 2 planes of movement; Sagittal flexion & extension. Coronal / Frontal abduction and adduction. Coronal cuts body into front (anterior) and back (posterior)
-
Ball and Sockey Joint
-
Triaxial: 3 planes of movement. Coronal / Frontal abduction and adduction. Sagittal flexion and extension. Transverse rotation
-
