New Caledonian Conifers
-
Aracuaricace
-
Araucarias: Smaller DBHs, but still sizeable, and generally taller
-
-
Araucaria laubenfelsii
- able to rapidly colonise forests after disturbance from nearby maquis, often attaining massive seedling densities and dominating early recruitment (Enright et al., 1999)
Fast population growth rates in Maquis, slower in forest due to slow growth rates of seedlings and saplings (Rigg et al., 2010) - suppression
Agathis ovata
High survival, low growth and recruitment rates in Maquis and forest (Enright et al 2003)
-
Araucaria nemorosa
Threatened - its limited seed dispersal is disallowing it to get to suitable sites (Fragmentation has limited its prospects) (Kettle et al., 2012)
Aracuraia angustifolia
Long lived tree - poor recruitment in forests (Rodrigues et al., 2022)
Maquis
Composed of light-demanding trees - refuge (maybe a disturbance gives these light demanding trees the opportunity to invade more shaded areas from these refugia?)
-
-
-
Conifers - tolerant of the poor soil conditions, and the toxic concentrations within the Maquis
Wind tolerant - good root systems allow for these conifers to tolerate open areas, and high wind
Lots of conifers - rare, and limited to very small populations in specific areas/conditions.
