Animals and the creatures that help us.
Natural Science
Animals that give us food and/or clothes.
Concept 1: Observe - Learners will examine the animals and their products, noticing different details about each.
Concept 2: Classify- Learners will sort products into either the food or clothing category.
Class Activity: Animal Product Investigation - We will review an informative article that simplifies the products derived from animals (Animal Smart, n.d.).
Types of animals.
Class Activity: Animal and product match-up - I will create two sets of cards: one with animals and one with their products. Learners will have to match the animals to their products.
Concept 1: Classify- Learners will match the animals with the products they create.
Concept 2: Compare- Learners will notice the similarities and differences between animals and products.
Social Science
Animals that work for us.
Concept 1: Relationships and interdependence- Learners will explore how humans and animals depend on each other.
Concept 2: Cause and effect- After the video, learners will understand the effects that animal work has on humans.
Class activity: Animal Helpers- I will play the learners a YouTube video which discusses different animals and how they help humans (YouTube, 2021). After the video, learners will draw one or more animals and explain how they help humans. Each learner will get the opportunity to discuss their drawings.
Animals that carry loads.
Class activity: Mapping animal helper- Learners will be split into groups and be given a map of a village. I will ask learners questions, such as: "Where do you think that horses will be used?" or "How do donkeys help the people in the village?" Learners will then have to mark where animals help the village. As a group, they will discuss their answers.
Concept 2: Relationship and interdependence- Learners will see how humans and animals work together to make life easier.
Concept 1: Place- Learners will understand where and how these animals are used in their environment.
Technology
Making animal homes.
Concept 1: Make- Learners will have to physically make an animal home using the materials provided.
Concept 2: Communicate- Learners will explain and share their animal homes with the class.
Class activity: Build an animal home- I will show the learners a short YouTube video about abouts and their respective homes (YouTube, 2022). I will then split learners into groups, and they will have to work together to make an animal home that they saw in the video.
Structure of animal homes.
Concept 1: Investigate- Learners will examine the structure and materials of animal homes
Concept 2: Evaluate- Learners will assess how each home is suitable for the animal.
Class activity: Investigate animal homes- I will show learners pictures of different animal homes. We will discuss the shape, how it looks, what animal lives there, and how it is made.
