Animals and creatures that help us
Natural science
Sub-topic 1: Animals that give us food and/or clothes.
Key concept 1: a lot of animals provide us with food but like cows who are the best when it comes to providing us with food as they give us milk, meat and cheese, which we use almost everyday. (Feeding the world, n.d)
Activity 1: there will be picture cards of different foods example, cheese. there will also be picture cards of animals example, cows where learners will have to match the type of food to the type of animals.
Sub-topic 2: creatures that help the environment
Key concept 2: creatures help to keep the environment alive, which helps us to live in a better world example, worms who clean up contaminated land by enhancing bioremediation by moving the soil they spread micro-organisms, which turns pollutants into non-toxic molecules. (Soil association, n.d)
Activity 2: learners will go outside in the school garden to find worms where they will place them in a glass jar filled with soil and observe how the worms move around.
Social science
Sub-topic 1: Animals that work for us
Key concept 1: there are many animals that work for us example, dogs. Dogs are used as theraphy dogs, service dogs and provide help for children with ADHD and autism. (ifaw, 2025)
Activity 1: there will be cards that shows different animals that work for us example, dogs. there will also be another set of cards that show the jobs that animals do example, a blind man walking. learners will then match the animal to the type of jobs that they do for us.
Sub-topic 2: animals are companions.
Key concept 2: animals do a lot for people but we mostly use them for companionship like cats as they enrich our lives in many ways like entertaining us. (HTS Theological Studies, 2014)
Activity 2: leaners must draw animals that they have at home or they can draw animals that they would like to have.
Technology
Sub-topic 1: creatures structures that inspire people.
Key concept 1: some people create building based on how creatures homes are made example, a man had to build a building with a natural cooling system and after seeing a termite structure that had natural ventilation through a system of air pockets he got the idea to do the same for the building. (Animal world protection, 2021)
Activity 1: leaners will choose a creature of their choice where they will have to learn one structure feature of that creature and then design a structure based on that feature example termite mounds and then a designed building with natural cooling system.
Sub-topic 2: Animals that provide textile products.
Key concept 2: people use animal fibers to produce textiles worldwide example sheep's wool, which help textile manufacturers. (Ecosilky, 2023)
Activity 2: there will be different textile products example wool where leaners will view it under a microscope and evaluate what animal it comes from.
