Chapter 17- Research Proposals
General Overview
Recognize the value of grant proposals in science
Before composing a proposal, you must research a funder's priorities
Proposal must establish a connection between your project's goals and the need or problem, the proposal solution, and organization's qualifications for implementing that solution
Components and Format
Follow instructions EXACTLY
Proposal should answer these questions:
Why this project?
Why you?
Why at your institution?
Why this sponsor?
Why now?
Include the following sections in a proposal
Abstract
Specific Aims
Background, including Statement of Need
Research Design
Significance/ Impact
Abstract
Write a concise abstract that includes all the main points of your proposal
Background
Unknown or problem/ statement of need
Overall objective of the proposal
General strategy
Significance/ impact
Pay attention to the first and the last sentence
Start with an important key term, and keep sentences short
Last sentence should highlight why the proposal is important to society, and thus contains significance or impact statement
Include a statement of need
Clearly identify the overall objective
Overall objective can be subdivided into specific (short term) Aims, which are the two to five steps needed to achieve objective in time frame of proposal
Specific Aims
List your specific Aims in precise language
Detailed approach to your overall goal laid out in two to five concrete steps
Should be written in a list rather than in paragraph form, and they should be placed in boldface to highlight them
Description typically summarizes the preliminary results or rationale, the hypothesis, and approach for each aim
Background
Provide context and preliminary results for each aim
Background section provides context for readers by describing current state- of - the - art, or what is presently known about the topic
Convince reviewers that specific Aims, once achieved, will have significant impact on the topic in question
Don't just state that you aim to gain scientific knowledge in your field; rather tie the proposal in to some broader scientific or clinical picture
Research Design
Describe the approach for each specific aim in detail
Also referred to as the Experimental Approach, Methodology, or Strategy section
Main function to propose in detail what approach you will take to address each of your specific Aims over the course of the proposal project
Organize the section into subsections according to your specific Aims
To help reviewers find the corresponding approach for each aim, divide the Research Approach section into subsections based on specific Aims
Heading: Specific aim/ objective
Rationale/ hypothesis (not always required)
Experimental design
Analysis
Expected results (outcomes and significance
Alternative strategies ( not always required)
Impact and Significance
End the proposal with a broad impact statement
In last paragraph, state the impact and significance of overall project
Focus on how human beings will benefit rather than own goal
May also mention evaluation plans, like measurable objectives
Additional Proposal Components
Costs should be realistic and justified
List the expenses required to successfully perform the proposed research
Conducting research costs money, often more than one imagines
