computing 1.3
The different roles of computers in a client-server and a peer-to-peer network
Client-server- model (the server)
control access and security to one shared file
manages printing jobs
provides email services
runs data backups
manages access to the internet
clients request data, connections and services from the server
Peer-to-peer model
a peer is equal to all other peers, serving its own file to others
each peer is responsible for its own security
each peer is responsible for its own backup
peers usually have there own printers( you can send print jobs to other peers to process, but that peer would need to be powered on to be able to communicate with the printer)
advantages of peer to peer model
Cheaper to set up – no expensive hardware required.
No dependency on a single machine.
very easy to maintain(specialist staff are not required)
disadvantages
Less secure.
Difficult to maintain a well-ordered file store
Users need to manage their own backups.
Factors that affect network performance
number of users
The number of users using the network this means that too many users using the network can slow the network
down
Error rate
Less reliable connections means that more errors will occur
Transmission media
Wired connections have a higher bandwidth then wireless connections
Bandwidth
The amount of data given or received at a given time
Latency
The delay between receiving and giving data
TYPES OF NETWORKS
Representation of a local area network (LAN):
Local area network covers a small geographical area located on a signal site
All hardware is owned by the organisation using it
LANS are wired with UTP/fibre optic cables or wireless via Wi-Fi
Representation of a wide area network (WAN):
Wide area network cover a large geographical area connecting all LANS together
area connecting all LANS together
WANs are connected via telephone lines, fiber optic cables
or satellite lines
The advantages and disadvantages of networks
Users can share files
Users can share peripherals : printers and connections to other networks . E.g.) the internet
Users can access their files from any computer on the network
Servers can control security, software updates and backup of data
Communications with other people
advantages
disadvantages
Increased security risks to data
Malware and viruses spread very easily between computers
If a server fails, the computers connected to it may not work
The computer may run more slowly if there is a lot of data traveling to the network
Factors that affect the performance of networks
Factors that affect the performance of bandwidth
