- - - - This is the secure attachment in children. People with this style are pretty balanced and coherent in their retelling of their past relationships. They value relationships and can talk about their past, whether it was good or bad, in a really clear and thoughtful way. Their stories are consistent and they can reflect on their emotions openly.
    - - People with this style tend to downplay the importance of relationships. They might talk about caregivers in an idealised way but struggle to recall supportive memories or even say they don't remember much from childhood. Their stories are often brief and don't have much emotional detail.
    - - People with this style are often feeling really caught up in their relationships, often feeling deeply connected, reliant or overwhelmed by them. Their stories can be long, sometimes rambling and they might come across as a bit anxious or even a bit angry. It can be tough for them to keep their thoughts consistent or coherent.
    - - This style comes up when someone has unresolved trauma or loss like the loss of a loved one or abuse. When they talk about these experiences, their words can get a bit disjointed or confusing. If often signals that they might have disorganised attachment in their own relationships and it can be a strong predictor of Disorganised attachment in their own children.
      - Mary Main, along with Judith Solomon, also introduced the Disorganised/Disoriented (D) attachment classification for infants (1986). These infants show contradictory, confused, or fearful behavior toward their caregiver in the Strange Situation. The Unresolved category on the AAI is the adult counterpart that predicts this infant pattern.
