Animals and creatures that help us.
Social Science
Dogs
Dogs as community helpers.
Key concept: Specialty trained dogs work as community helpers in roles like police k-9s, guide dogs and therapy dogs, providing safety and comfort (ThePestNest, 2024).
Inquiry activity: "Community helper dog match up".
Learners match picture cards of different working dogs. Police dogs, guide dogs and herding dogs to correct tools and job description.
Cows
From farm to table.
Key concept: The products we get from cattle go through a process before they reach us. For example; milk goes from the cow on the farm, to a processing plant, to the supermarket and finally to our homes (SA Farmers Magazine, 2023).
Inquiry activity: "The milk journey chain".
Talk about where we buy milk. "But where does the shop get it?". Give each learner in a small group a card with one step of the journey (a picture of a cow, a milk truck, a factory, a supermarket, a fridge). The group of learners will work together to line up in the correct order, creating a human" chain" of how milk travels. They explain their step to the class.
Natural Science
Bees
The pollination process.
Key concept: Bees move pollen from flower to flower, helping plants grow the fruits and vegetables we eat (UN environment programmer, 2022).
Inquiry activity: "Buzz pollination simulation".
Using a pipe cleaner bees and chessy puff as pollen. Learners will stimulate pollination between paper flowers.
Sheeps
What do sheep need?
Key concept: Mccune (2021) explains that sheep are herbivores that need grass, water, shelter and space to live a healthy life.
Inquiry activity: "Build a sheep habitat".
Using a old shoebox, learners will create a model farm habitat. Including grass, water, trough and a shelter.
Technology
Horses
Technology in horse drawn transport.
Key concept: A cart is a form of technology that allows a horse to pull heavy loads or transport people. The design of the wheels and axle makes the work easier for the horse (RickySpears, 2025).
Inquiry activity: "Build a simple cart".
Using recyclable materials (small cardboard boxes, bottle caps for wheels, straws for axles). Learners work in teams to design and build a simple cart that can be pulled by a toy horse. They test their designs to see if they can carry a small load.
Chickens
Technology in egg production.
Key concept: Lee (2025) shows that technology, like incubators and automated feeding systems, help farms care for chickens and collect eggs more efficiently and safely.
Inquiry activity: "The incredible egg protector challenge".
Learners given the challenge: "Can you design a container that will protect a raw egg from a short drop?" Using materials like straws, tape, cardboard, and cotton balls. They will design, build and test their prototypes. This mimics the engineering problem solving used to design packaging for transporting eggs.
