Animals and creatures that help us
Social Science
Sub-topic 1
Animals help disabled people (Health Direct, 2024)
Concept 1: Guide dogs help people who are either blind or deaf.
Activity: Learners watch an age-appropriate video of a guide dog helping its' owner who is blind. They will be able to see what the guide dogs have to do to help their owners. Learners can then complete a drawing of what they just learned.
Sub-topic 2
Animals throughout History (Joubert, N.d.: 128-129; 131-134)
Concept 2: How animals were used in the past for labour and transportation
Activity: Learners are given a worksheet where they have to indicate how transportation has changed over time. For example, horse-drawn carts and ox wagons are from the past, while cars and tractors are from the present. They would need to sort the two out into either 'past' or 'present' depending from what time period its from.
Natural Science
Sub-topic 1
Animals help with food production (Animal Smart, N.d.)
Concept 1: What kinds of food do we get from different animals? E.g- milk from cows, eggs from chickens, meat etc.
Activity: You can conduct an experiment to test the freshness of eggs. You place the eggs in water, and if the egg sinks, it is still very fresh, but if it floats, it is old, and is probably not safest to eat.
Sub-topic 2
Animals help the environment (Powis, 2024)
Concept 2: There are certain animals that are crucial in helping our environment. E.g.- Earthworms that fertilise our soil, bees with pollination, and even flies (they help with getting rid of decay)
Activity: Demonstration of bee pollination. Materials needed are cotton buds, flowers, and coloured powder. Using the cotton buds, the learners can then sprinkle the powder onto the flowers, to see what pollination looks like.
Technology
Sub-topic 1
Using animal products to make things (Common Objective, 2018)
Concept 1: We get certain clothing products and accessories from animals. E.g.- wool from sheep, silk from silkworms and leather from cows and even crocodiles. (shoes and/or handbags)
Activity: Learners design their own clothing items made from either wool or leather, They draw their idea, label it, and explain how it is useful and what it is used for. They then present their idea to the class.
Sub-topic 2
Technology for caring for animals
Concept 2: We have certain technologies that cater for animals, such as water troughs, shelters, kennels and coops, and milking machines.
Activity: Learners can build a model of either a chicken coop or cow shed by using clay or boxes.
