Bees - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Honey bees are fabulous flyers, reaching speeds around 25km per hour and beating their wings 200 times per second, which enables them to efficiently collect nectar and pollen from flowers (National Geographic Kids, n.d.).
    - - Learners observe bee pictures, identify body parts (wings, antennae, stripes, stinger)
  - - - Learners will explore the different types of bees found in a colony - the queen bee, worker bees, and drones and understand how each type plays a specific role in the survival and functioning of the hive. According to National Geographic (2023), a bee colony consist of three main types of bees, the queen, workers and drones each with distinct responsibilities and ensure the colonies success.
    - - Learners examine pictures of different bee types, compare their features and work in groups to classify them. They then present their classifications, encouraging observation, questioning and inquiry-based learning.
- - - - Learners will understand how different beekeeping tools and technologies assist beekeepers in managing hives safely and efficiently (South African Bee Industry, 2023).
    - - Learners examine beekeeping tools, match each to its use, and work in groups to create a simple diagram or chart explaining the tools.
  - - - Concept
        
        Learners will understand how honey is separated from the honeycomb using different techniques and tools while maintaining the quality and purity of the honey (South African Bee Industry Organisation, 2023)
      - Learners explore pictures and videos of different honey extraction methods, compare them and work in groups to discuss advantages and challenges. They then present their findings, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking.
- - - - Learners will understand how bees have influenced human culture through traditions, beliefs and symbols across different societies (Iziko Museums of South Africa,2025),
    - - Leaners research how bees feature in stories, art of traditions in different cultures and create a poster to share their discoveries.
  - - - Learners will understand how beekeeping has evolved into a viable profession in South Africa, encompassing various career paths such as commercial honey production, pollination services, education and entrepreneurship (Bhive, 2022).
    - - Learners research different beekeeper careers, interview a beekeeper or watch a video and share what they learned about the profession.
