Honey bees are fabulous flyers, reaching speeds around 25km per hour and beating their wings 200 times per second, which enables them to efficiently collect nectar and pollen from flowers (National Geographic Kids, n.d.).

Types of bees
Concept
Learners will explore the different types of bees found in a colony - the queen bee, worker bees, and drones and understand how each type plays a specific role in the survival and functioning of the hive. According to National Geographic (2023), a bee colony consist of three main types of bees, the queen, workers and drones each with distinct responsibilities and ensure the colonies success.
Activity
Learners examine pictures of different bee types, compare their features and work in groups to classify them. They then present their classifications, encouraging observation, questioning and inquiry-based learning.

Concept
Learners will understand how different beekeeping tools and technologies assist beekeepers in managing hives safely and efficiently (South African Bee Industry, 2023).
Activity
Learners examine beekeeping tools, match each to its use, and work in groups to create a simple diagram or chart explaining the tools.
Honey Extraction Methods
