Animals that help us
Natural Science
Animals that give us clothes:
CONCEPT 1:
Life and living:
This topic connects to the concept well because humans need clothing to survive (Lindholm and Bodette, 2024).
CONCEPT 2:
Matter an materials
Sheep wool connects to matter and materials because it is a natural material that can be changed into yarn or fabric to make clothes. It shows how natural matter can be processed and used in everyday life (Sewport Support Team, 2025).
Activity 2: Children feel real wool and learn that it comes from sheep. They then stick pieces of wool to a drawing of a piece of clothing item.
Animals that give us food:
CONCEPT 1:
Life and living:
This topic connects to the concept well because honey is food and without food humans would not be alive (Jones, 2024).
CONCEPT 2:
Energy and change
Bees use energy from the nectar the collect to make honey. This shows how energy changes from sunlight in flowers to nectar, and then into honey stored in the hive (PestWorldforKids, n.d.).
Activity 1: Children taste honey and learn that bees collect nectar from flowers to make it. They then draw or discuss the simple steps from flower to bee to hive to honey.
Technology
Animals that work for us:
CONCEPT 1:
Design
in order for these animals to help humans through service, technology needed to be designed in order to create a seedless connection between the animals and then humans.
CONCEPT 2:
Make
The technology was not only designed and thought to work in theory, it was put into practice.
Activity 3: Learners design a simple model or drawing of animal tool, like a cart pulled by a horse or an ox plough. They explain how people use technology with animals to make life and work easier.
Animals that give us clothes:
CONCEPT 1:
Make
The raw materials were made into a final product.
CONCEPT 2:
Design
The clothes are designed for good function and sometimes nice style too.
Activity 4: Learners explore how raw materials from animals, like wool or leather are processed into clothing. They draw or label simple steps showing how technology helps change animal materials into finished clothes.
Social Science
Animals that work for us:
CONCEPT 1:
Relationships and interdependence
Humans rely and depend on animals for provision.
CONCEPT 2:
Adaptation
The animals have had to adapt to their environment so humans have used that to their advantage.
Activity 6: Children cut out or draw pictures of animals like dogs, horses and cows that help people with work. They then share how each animal helps us, such as pulling loads, guarding, providing milk.
Animals that give us clothes:
CONCEPT 1:
Interdependence
Humans rely on animals for clothing (they are dependent on animals).
CONCEPT 2:
Adaptation
The animals have had to adapt to their environment so humans have used that to their advantage in making clothing.
Activity 5: Children look at pictures of animals such as sheep, silkworms and cows that provide materials for clothes. They match each type of clothing it helps make, such as wool for jerseys and leather for shoes.
