Historical trauma: health and social effects of long term population level violence individuals might experience do to historical situations
Examples include: Holocaust victims, Japanese survivors of WW2, and African Americans due to slavery.
As the Europeans and American Indians were merging and growing in population, the population continued to expand westward. This removed Indian people fromt he southeastern states and made way for settlers. This was met with resistance but there was a period of violent wars during this time. However over time, these reservations became very poor and Indians had a difficult time making a living.
This led to cultural suppression and violence. Additionally, poverty rates more than tripled. This shows a culturally significant correlation including cardiovascular disease and risk factors among the American Indians and natives to the land.
There were high loss scores associated with emotional symptoms. This framework has been heavily studied to especially look further into individuals, family, and community.
Individual impacts are strong including PTSD and axiety. Family level impact include impaired family communication, and community-level impacts are found within a breakdown of culture. It makes me wonder what affect has the greatest affect on the individual?
