Animals and Creatures that Help Us.
Social Science.
Community helpers and animals (DBE,2011:p.44; Meier& Naude,2021:263-270)
Concept 1: Farmers beekeepers and veterinarians work with animals to support food production and animal care ( Twinkle,2023).
Concept 2: Communities depend on animals for food, transport and companionship ( Britannica Kids,2023).
Class Activity: Role-play Inquiry-Who helps animals in our community?Learners brainstorm local helpers who work with animals. Show a video about animal helpers like farmers or vet and allow leaners to ask questions like; What do you do to help animals?
Caring for the environment ( DBE,2011:p.56; Meier & Naude,2021:128-137).
Concept 1:Animals are part of a balanced ecosystem that people must protect ( WWF,2023).
Concept 2: Pollution and habitat destruction harm animals and people's health ( National Geographic, 2023).
Class Activity: Action Inquiry - How Can We Make Our School Cleaner for Animals and People? Learners will walkaround the schoolyard to observe littre and discuss its impact on animals and plant. They record their findings using tally charts or drawings.
Technology.
Tools and inventions from animals ( DBE,2011, p57).
Concept 1: People use materials like wool, milk and wax to make products ( Britannica,2023).
Concept 2: Animal designs insipire inventions ( Benyus, 2002).
Class Activity: Making Butter: Inquiry Problem-How can we turn milk from cows into useful product like butter? Learners shake milk in a jar to make butter. They will observe changes and discuss What happens to the milk? They will reflect is the butter read? How could we improve?
Technological solutions to protect animals ( Meier & Naude, 2021: 128-137).
Concept 1:Technology can help care for animals e.g. using bee hotels ( Prendergast & Wilson, 2024).
Concept 2: People design and build tools to protect animals (e.g. fences, shelters) ( Friends of the Earth, 2023).
Class Activity: Design Challeng-Can you build a home for an animal? Inquiry prompt: What do animals need in a safe shelter? Learners observe real animal shelters like bird nests, dog kenels beehives. In groups they plan and design a simple animal shelter using materials e.g. boxes, paper and sticks. Test for stability and discuss: Is it strong enough? Would the animal be safe inside? The will present their designs in class.
Natural Science
Animal helpers in nature (bees, earthworms) (DBE,2011: 57-58; Meier & Naude,2021:98-99).
Concept 1:Bees help with pollination, which allows plants to grow and produce fruit and seed ( National Geographic Kids, 2023).
Concept 2:Earthworms improve soil health by breaking down organic matter and creating tunnels for air and water flow (USADA,2021).
Class Activity: Mini Investigation- Who helps our garden grow? Learners observe a small patch of soil or garden at school. Teacher prompts questions such as: What do you notice about the soil? Do you see insects or worms? What might they be doing? Leaners collect soil smples and gently look for worms or insects and recor their findings through drawings.
Animal helpers for people, cows, and dogs (DBE,2011:p 57-58; Meier& Naude,2021:263-270).
Concept 1: Cows provide humans with milk and dairy products, essential for a balanced diet ( Better Health Channel, 2023).
Class Activity: Inquiry Question- What do cows and dogs do to help people? Leaners brainstorm what products we get from cows e.g. milk, cheese, and leather. We read a story about cow being milkrd or dogs help people ( guide or police dogs). Then learners discuss and identify how people use these animal products or services. After that they will create a Thank you animal helpers poster showing animals assist humans.
Concept 2: Guide dogs help people with disabilities to move safely and live independently ( Guide dogs UK,2022).
