fluid mosaic model: membrane depicted as a mosaic of protein molecules bobbing in a fluid bilayer of phospholipids
Cell membrane: selectively permeable layer that encloses the cell, made of the phospholipid bilayer
membrane proteins: integral components of the cell membrane
Transmembrane proteinsL proteins that pass all the way through the membrane
Peripheral proteins: proteins bound to the surface of the membrane
integral proteins: proteins that penetrate the hydrophobic core
Cholestrol: a type of lipid that controls the cell membrane
at warm temperatures, cholesterol restrains movement of phospholipids
at cold temperatures, cholesterol maintains fluidity by preventing tight packing
Glycolipids/glycoproteins: carbohydrates bounded to lipids and proteins, aid in cell recognition
Transport proteins: assists hydrophilic substances across cell membrane
Channel proteins: a tunnel like structure that moves hydrophilic molecules and ions
Plasmodesmata: plant cells
gap junctions: animal cells
Aquaporins: channel proteins that greatly increase the rate of passage for water molecules
Carrier proteins: binds to molecules (can cause structural change to move across the membrane)
Cell transport: the movement of substances across a cells membrane
Passive transport: No ATP required, movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration, the molecules are moving down its concentration gradient
diffusion: requires a concentration gradient
Facilitated diffusion: diffusion with help from proteins
osmosis: requires a selective permeable membrane
hypertonic: movement of water out of cells
hypotonic: movement of water into the cell
isotonic: movement of water in and out of cell equally
lyse: bursting of cell
crenate: shriveling of cell
flaccid: limp
turgid: plumping of cell
Active transport: requires ATP, movement of molecules from low concentration to high concentration
