ANIMALS AND CREATURES THAT HELP US.
NATURAL SCIENCE
Sub - Topic One: Bees and Pollination
:
VALUES
Develop a respect for nature, treat insects with care and precaution as well as learn to develop an appreciation for biodiversity.
SKILLS
Ability to observe, predict, classify, record and compare how bees transfer pollen to plants and flowers. Investigate the different types of pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insect species that promote pollination. Ability to analyze and communicate findings effectively.
ACTIVITIES
Show the learners videos of bees pollinating flowers and let them record their observations and findings.
Learners can engage in group discussions and ask questions like "What do you think will happen if there were no more bees on this earth?
Create a bee and a bee hive using recyclable materials.
KEY CONTENT
The fundamental role of bees in the ecosystem and its importance during pollination as well as the production of honey.
Description
: According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, "pollination occurs when pollen grains are been transferred from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma." This process therefore enables effective pollination which allows the flowers to effectively survive within our ecosystem.
Sub- topic Two: Earthworms and Soil Health
SKILLS
Learners will be able to: Observe, classify, compare and differentiate between causes and effects as well as communicate their findings effectively on the different species of earthworms. Evaluate ways in which soil can be reused for sustainability. Compare how the different types of compost contribute towards soil turnover.
VALUES
They will develop environmental care and responsibility, develop ways to eradicate soil erosion as well as respect for insects and creatures.
KEY CONTENT
Earthworms play a pivotal role in fostering plant growth and improves soil aeration within the ecosystem.
ACTIVITIES
Learners can observe earthworms in a container filled with soil and document their observations.
Create a chart with a diagram of how worms contribute towards plant growth.
Group discussions in regards to the importance of worms for farmers and the ecosystem.
Create a garden filled with soil and worms crafts made from recyclable materials.
SOCIAL SCIENCE
Sub-topic One: Working Animals ( Guide dogs, Therapy animals)
KEY CONTENT
Learners will be able to understand the colossal role of animals (dogs) that are used for individuals with special needs.
SKILLS
Ability to communicate findings and observations effectively such as evaluating different types of work dogs do such as providing a service to people with special needs or dogs that assist in search and rescue activities helping locate humans during unforeseen circumstances such as natural disasters or even sudden death.
VALUES
Show empathy, effective co-operation, respect and care for dogs as well as development of responsibilities. Foster a relationship between dogs and human beings.
ACTIVITIES
Role play scenarios with guide dogs assisting human beings.
Interviews with local farmers, therapist, or a vet on how to work with working animals.
Creation of posters and charts showing different types of jobs that animals do for human beings.
Group discussions on how to care for these animals that provide a service to humanity.
Sorting and matching jobs to the type of animals used.
The fundamental role of guide dogs are to provide assistance to individuals with special needs and to help them navigate safely during their daily routines and activities as stated by the guide dogs association (2025). This statement clearly highlights the importance of how dogs contribute towards the overall health and safety for human beings with special needs.
Sub- topic two: Animals used in culture and history.
SKILLS
Enhances communication, fosters research as well as develops a connection between animals and human beings. Investigate and research cultural history and backgrounds related to cows, chickens and goats. Conduct enquiries and observations of animals from both past and present.
VALUES
Fosters empathy, compassion, respect for animals, enhances cultural awareness. Take responsibility in protecting these species so that they do not become extinct.
KEY CONTENT
Diverse cultural symbolism as well as providing nutrition/food and source of work/transport. Evident in art, festivals and stories. Vital in local traditions.
ACTIVITIES
Group discussions on different animals that provide work. Discussion on different cultural roles for animals. Make a model of different animals and their type of work for humans using recyclable materials. A visit to the local farm to see how animals work on the farm and record their observations. Sorting or classifying different animals to their cultural role and jobs. (Sheep provides wool, cows give milk, chickens used for cultural sacrifices).
TECHNOLOGY
SKILLS
It encourages adequate research skills, promotes creative design abilities as well as effective problem-solving techniques. Makes provision for investigation, such as asking questions, exploring and obtaining data. Ability to build and make animal models and communicate researched information accurately.
VALUES
It fosters innovation and creativity. Creates a sense of responsibility and accountability. develops precision and accuracy and pays attention to small details.
KEY CONTENT
Advanced technology promotes assistance to animals which in return plays a vital role in assisting human beings for an example, harnesses and equipment for guide/ rescue dogs.
ACTIVITIES
Learners can make and design tools and equipment that will benefit humans and guide dogs (making their lives simpler and easier). Role plays that show how equipment can be used for assisting individuals with special needs. Including guest speakers to provide information on relevant tools and machinery for guide dogs that can be used for people with special needs or search and rescue purposes.
Sub-topic one: Tools and machinery that assist animals.
Sub-topic two: Advanced technological equipment that enhances environmental health.
KEY CONTENT
Equipment that enables humans to protect pollinators and promote soil health.
According to Altum Technologies (2024) evidently proclaims that, "Technological innovations not only enhance our understanding of environmental health issues but also provide practical solutions to mitigate unforeseen challenges that may arise." This statement clearly highlights the significant role of fostering effective technological processes that can be utilized to eradicate challenges within the environment.
SKILLS
Investigating the type of equipment that will be required through observations, planning and experimenting. Ability to evaluate feedback and observations accurately to create and design equipment models. Ability to communicate effectively individually and in a group during collaborations.
VALUES
Showing appreciation through promoting environmental awareness programs. Practicing environmental sustainability by making use of recyclable materials to create and design different types of beneficial equipment's.
ACTIVITIES
Creation of projects that designs models of tools and equipment's to protect pollinators and enhance soil sustainability. Group discussions on how to incorporate technology to assist animals such as protecting beehives and creating compost buckets. Outdoor activities to explore compost bins and observe and record findings such as different types of earthworms. Constructing different types of compost waste collectors with recyclable materials.
