Animals and Creatures that help us.
Social Science
Animal rights and human responsibilities
Inquiry activity: Learners must interview family members and find out ways they can better care and protect animals in our environment.
Key Concept: Humans are responsible for caring and protecting animals.
Animals that provide services to us
Inquiry Activity: Learners must role play a scenario where they use a horse for transportation.
Key Concept: Guide dogs help guide disabled persons; domestic dogs help protect our homes and herd cattle; camels, horses and donkeys help with transportation (DBE, 2025).
Natural Science
Balancing the ecosystem
Key Concept: Decomposers and scavengers like earthworms, vultures and ravens break down and recycle dead organic matter balancing the ecosystem and enriching the quality of the soil (Naude & Meier, 2025)
Inquiry Activity: Collect soil samples in 3 containers and add worms in each container. One container must be air tight, the second one must be placed in a dark room, the third one must have damp soil. Learners must observe changes over seven days, compare and record findings.
Pollination and seed dispersal
Inquiry Activity: Play a video for learners to observe how bats interact with plants.
Key Concept: Bees, bats, squirrels and birds help plants reproduce first by pollination and secondly by seed dispersal during consumption (DBE, 2011: 57)
Technology
Making safe products for pollinators
Key Concept: Make a product that will repel pest but be safe for pollinators (Naude & Meier, 2025)
Inquiry Activity: Investigate and use kitchen products that can repel pests without harming pollinators like bees.
Making animal homes
Key Concept: Animal home structures must have strength, sturdiness and stability (Naude & Meier, 2025)
Inquiry Activity: Make a safe, stable, and strong house for a dog using recycled materials.
