The land ethic
Aldo Leopold’s idea of the ‘land ethic’: ‘A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.’
Biotic community
views the natural world as an interconnected community where all species, including humans, are interdependent. The "land ethic" requires that humans act as stewards of this community.
Sustainability
Leopold advocated for managing resources in a way that ensures their long-term health and availability

OTHER THINKERS
Peter Singer (1976) makes the case for animal welfare through the idea that animals are sentient beings such as ourselves and also have the right to not feel pain. He dubbed those who saw humans above animals in this sense as ‘speciesist’. Special consideration in this sense was given to self-aware animals such as the great apes.
