Food processing - ingestion, digestion, absorption, and elimination
Four main feeding mechanisms - filtering, substrate feeding, fluid feeding, and bulk feeding
-
digestion - the second stage in food processing, the breaking down of food into molecules
-
Elimination - undigested material passes out of the digestive system, completing the process
Oral Cavity ->salivary glands -> mucus and amylase -> pharynx -> esophagus food is passed through peristalsis -> sphincter
Stomach , roles in digestion storages and process food in a liquid suspension, secretes gastric juice , the mixture of gastric juice and ingested food is called chyme
Small intestine- most enzymatic hydrolysis of macromolecules occurs here, is over 20ft long in humans, the first 10in forms the duodenum (where chyme, mixes with juices from the pancreas, liver and gallbladder)
