ANIMALS AND CREATURES THAT HELP US
TECHNOLOGY
Designing and building animal a shelter
KEY CONCEPT (PROCESS SKILLS)
: Design, make and evaluate - Learners make an animal home
ACTIVITY
: Learners create an animal home using recycled materials and test the suitability for rain. They will then evaluate whether the materials were appropriate
Different animal homes/shelters
VALUES
: Environmental awareness, teamwork and problem solving skills
Equipment that help feed for animals
Feeding
equipment: free flowing sources, buckets, tubs, troughs (Mwato, 2025)
KEY CONCEPT (PROCESS SKILLS)
: Investigate & design - Learners investigate the problem and design a solution
KNOWLEDGE AREA:
Materials, tools and safety
ACTIVITY
: Learners are presented with the problem that a farmer needs a feeder. They investigate existing feeders and in small groups, design their own on paper using different materials and tools
Watering equipment
: feed bins, hay feeders, storage systems (Mwato, 2025)
VALUES
: Learn to be creative and care for animals
SOCIAL SCIENCES
Caring for animals and the environment
Economic - mistreating animals that produce food products results in loss of/lower product production leading to an increase in demand and decrease in supply. Consumers will then suffer from price increases (SAFI, 2024)
VALUES
: Responsibilities and compassion
Consequences - physical, mental and psychological, and economical (SAFI, 2024)
ACTIVITY
: Learner explore treatment of animals throughout the years, identifying animal neglect and suggest better approaches
KEY CONCEPT: Cause and effect - Humans mistreating animal have consequences on humans
Animals that work for us
:
Donkeys: Domesticated 5000 years ago. Used as pack animals and for ploughing grounds on farms guided by humans. Also used for transport pulling carts (Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, 2025)
Dogs: Therapy dogs help relieve anxiety. Assisstance dogs (service dogs) - help disabled individuals (IFAW, 2025) .Sniffer dogs
Horses: used as transport
KEY CONCEPT
: Relationships and interdependence - Animals and people are dependent on one another for survival and help
ACTIVITY
: Learners talk to community member who work with animal (farmers, police members) and build knowledge on how animals help humans and what humans do in return. They orally share findings
VALUES
: Respect for animals and empathy
NATURAL SCIENCES
Animals that give us clothing materials.
Cows - leather
KEY CONCEPT
- Matter and Materials: Animals produces natural materials
Sheep - wool (socks, shirts, blankets, knitted jerseys) (Segard Masurel, 2024)
CLASS ACTIVITY:
Learners handle samples of materials, touching and comparing the different textures and communicating their findings verball.
VALUES
: Respects for nature's materials and learn responsible use thereof
Animals that give us food
Cows - produce milk used to make dairy products (cheese, butter and yogurt). Cattle - meat (beef cuts). (AnimalSmart, 2024)
Chickens - meat and eggs
Bees - honey
KEY CONCEPT
- Live and Living: Animals have body systems and life processes that allows them to produce food for human consumption
CLASS ACTIVITY:
Learners observe and classify real food items to match them to the correct animal
VALUES
- Learn to appreciate and respect living things
Chicken - coop Bee - beehive Dog - kennel Monkey - tree
