Social Sciences
Working animals that help humans
Integrated activity:
Learners can watch different videos of different animals helping people in their daily lives. They can do this all together as a class and create a poster showing different animals that assist humans.
Working animals:
Humans rely on animals to assist in important situations.
Horses and dogs help with farming therapy and supporting people with disabilities (guide dogs).
(DBE, 2011, p. 64; Naudé & Meier, 2025, p. 152)
Different jobs with animals
zookeepers
Veterinarians
Integrated activity:
Learners can role-play as zookeepers or vets (play doctor for animals), Explaining how their work supports animals that help humans.
People work as zookeepers or veterinarians to care for animals that help humans.
Technology
Tools for working with animals
Humans design tools to use animal power effectively.
What tools help humans work with animals?
ploughs
harnesses or collars for dogs
housing for animals
(Naudé & Meier, 2025, p. 150)
Integrated Activity:
Learners design a tool to help humans and animals out of cardboard or boxes. ( An animal home/beehive).
(DBE, 2011; Meier & Naudé, 2025)
Environmental technology involving animals.
Some technology uses animals to help humans.
Bees help with the pollinating of plants in order for them to reproduce.
Worms Composting the soil provides a healthier soil for our ecosystems and humans to continue to grow, live, and plant crops.(DBE, 2011, p. 63)
Integrated activity:
Explore within a small compost/soil bin created by the teacher and watch a video about what relationship worms and soil have. Have a discussion on what the learners observed in the video and while exploring the sensory bin. Get learners to draw their findings on what they think the soil would look like if a worm has been there.
Natural Sciences
Animals that help the environment
Integrated activity:
A walk around, mini observation of the school grounds/garden where they play. Look out for ants, worms, and flowers. Have a discussion about what would happen if all these small animals and flowers disappeared.
What animals help the environment and make it better for us?
Bees aid in pollination. They pollinate plants and flowers in order to help with the reproduction of fruit that we eat.
Earthworms and ants maintain soil and ecosystem health. Nutrients in our soil aid plant and crop growth for our food plants and help farmers with their irrigation. (DBE, 2011, pp. 60–61)
Animals that provide food and clothing.
Integrated Activity:
All learners in the class bring example pictures of food or clothes from different animals. The teacher creates a 'helpful animals' chart, which will show all the animals and what animals provide what food.(Naudé & Meier, 2025, p. 142)
What different animals provide products for humans?
Cows provide us milk
Bees provide us honey and beeswax.
Sheep provide us wool to make clothes.
(DBE, 2011, p. 59)
