Animals and creatures that help us
Natural Science
Bees and Flowers
"Bees help flowers make seeds and fruits" (Smith, 2020).
Activity: Watch bees or look at pictures and draw how they help flowers. Example: the learners will draw their understanding of how honey is made.
Animal Homes and Needs
Animals need food, water and shelter.
Activity: Sort the animals into groups: pets, farm animals or wild animals. Draw their homes. Example: the learners will sort all of their favourite animals into specific groups.
Earthworms and Soil
Earthworms help plants grow.
Activity: Look at soil with and without earthworms. Draw what you see. Example: the learners will add as much detail into the picture to find the difference of soil alone and soil with worms.
Social Science
Animals that Help People
Some animals help people, like guide dogs or farm animals.
Activity: Draw a picture of an animal helping a person and explain it in a few sentences. Example: the learners will explain how this animal is helping the person and what will happen to this person if the animal disappears.
Animals in History
"Animals have helped humans for a long time" (Jones & Brown, 2019).
Activity: Make a timeline with pictures of horses, camels, donkeys and other animals people used in the past. Example: the learners will draw a timeline of about ten different animals and say which animal is the most helpful.
Caring for Animals
People help animals stay healthy and safe.
Activity: Visit a local farm or look at pictures online. Draw how people help animals. Example: the learners will draw their understandings of how different animals can help people.
Technology
Watching Animals Digitally
We can use cameras to watch animals.
Activity: Take a picture of the animal and write about what it is doing. Example: the learners can take a picture of a dog from the camera and write about what he is running away from.
Show what you learnt
We can use pictures to tell others about the animals.
Activity: Make a poster about your favourite helping animal. Example: the learner will make a poster of a guide dog helping a blind person.
Tools to Help Animals
"People use tools to help care for animals" (Wilson, 2021).
Activity: Look at different feeding machines. Write how it helps. Example: the learners can look at a picture of a cow and tell us how the cow receives food and how it goes through the process of giving us the milk.
