Natural Science
Role of animals in ecosystem
Concept: The importance of science and exploration, as stated by Beni, Stears & James(2012:66). Learn more about pollination and insect aid in the life cycle. Nhase & Dube(2023:33-39) emphasise encouraging the gaining of scientific skills through an inquiry-based approach.
Activity: Investigate and observe insects in nature, and read about pollination. Matching the animal to the food they produce chart.
Animal products we use.
Concept: Production of food and materials from animals.(DBE, 2011, pp. 54-61)
Conduct a touch-and-describe experiment to enhance understanding of the various products animals offer us, such as leather, wool, honey and record findings.
Social Science
Relationship between animals and humans
Concept: A brief history lesson on how animals and humans have worked together for many years.
Activity: Listen and observe a simple video presentation of their shared history leading to economic growth, and thereafter draw a mind map with pictures and words in the order of occurring events.
Animal Care
Concept: Look at laws that protect animal rights. Directing us back upholding justice for ethical practices and the well-being of all that is outlined in CAPS documents(DBE, 2018)
Activity: A trip to an animal shelter, take care of animals by petting and feeding them. Learners will identify good and bad treatment of animals, improving their social and moral development.
Technology
Farming and processing technology.
Concept: Stages of production, from the farm to our homes.
Activity: Designing an egg made from the egg carton. Detailed steps showcasing the construction process of an egg tray transformed into a colourful 3D egg.
Technology in animal care
Concept: How technology helps animals, taking a closer look at various veterinary services used to support animals.
Activity: Make a collar for a pet to use for a rescue role play using recycled materials.
