Animals and creatures that help us
Natural Science
Key Knowledge:
Food Chains
-Life cycles
-Animal habitats
-Roles of different animals in a certain ecosystem such as pollination
Skills:
-Observation
-Classification
-Data collection
-Basic scientific inquiry
Values:
-Having respect for all living things and guardianship of nature as well as curiosity about the natural world
Subtopics:
-Life Sciences
-Earth Sciences
Life Sciences:
-Why do animals help us?
-Learners use prior knowledge to brainstorm possible reasons and formulate a hypothesis. each group presents their hypothesis, and the class discusses it. They observe through a video on why they help us and they experiment by seeing if pets are great companions and make people happy. Students collect data and analyze the results
Earth Sciences:
-Does climate change affect animals and creatures?
-Learners experiment by doing research. They explain their research to the class on habitat loss, loss of food sources, transmitted diseases, extinctions. Learners watch a video on how climate change affects animals and creatures. They write a paragraph on how it affects them to see if they paid attention. Learners write down suggestions on how humans can help and discuss it with the class for example, donate towards wildlife recovery.
Technology
Skills:
-Using technology to gather and analyze information about the animals and creatures
Values:
-Ethical use of technology and collaboration
Subtopics:
-Information and data
-Artificial Intelligence
Information and data:
-What animals do and how they do it
-Students work in groups of 4 to brainstorm ideas on what animals and creatures do to help humans and how they do it. Each group gets a specific animal or creature and they need to discuss on that specific animal or creature. They will pose a Big Question that they would like to answer. They do their research and create a power point explaining their points. They present the power point and they discuss their animal or creature with the class. Afterwards they write a paragraph on what they learnt, what animal/creature they got and summarise they power point.
Artificial Intelligence:
-How does AI work in order to do research?
-Have students use AI to do research on the subtopic "Animals that work for us". Once receiving their response, they need to adjust it to their own words and present it to the class in order to discuss it. They will reflect on the process and analyze on how AI responded and how they adjusted the response as well as look at their own writing style.
Social Science
Key Knowledge:
-Economic impact of animals for example farming
-Relationships between humans and animals
-Historical and cultural significance of animals for example working animals
Subtopics:
-Anthropology
-Sociology
Anthropology:
-How did humans do things years ago and how did animals and creatures help them back in the day?
-Learners would do a field trip to an old museum. They would observe the different cultures and take note on how things were done back then. The teacher asks the guiding questions to test their prior and existing knowledge. Once they get back to school, they write a paragraph on what they observed and discuss how they think animals helped humans back then and discuss it with the class
Sociology:
-Do relationships with animals and creatures matter?
-Learners brainstorm about the certain types of relationships. They can bring their pets to schools and explain the relationship that they have with them and why it matters to have a good relationship. Once they did show and tell, they will get into groups of 4 and discuss the activity and what they learnt and how explain their own point of views on how relationships with animals and creatures matter and why it is important.
Skills:
-Doing research
-Putting one's mapping skills to the test
-Presenting information
Values:
-Understanding diverse cultural perspectives
-Empathy for animals and responsible pet ownership
Key Knowledge:
Tools and technologies are used to study animals, for example, cameras and drones
-Technologies are also used to observe animals as well as digital tools are used to create presentations.
