Animals and Creatures that Help us
Natural Science
Animals that give us food or clothes
Key Concept
- Animals are a living source for many things we eat and wear.
Use the
"From Farm to Table" picture sorting activity
to have learners classify and sequence common animal products (milk, eggs, wool, honey) by tracing them back from the final product to the source animal (e.g., cow $\to$ milk $\to$ cheese).
Animals that keep my garden healthy
Some small creatures do important work in the soil and on plants to keep them alive.
Learners will work in groups to create a simple "worm home" in a jar, using soil, sand, and leaves. Over three days, they will observe how the worms mix the soil and what they eat, then record their findings through drawings or dictated sentences.
Technology
Making tools that use animal parts
People can use strong parts of animals to design and make simple tools and objects that help them.
"Design and Create an African Drum" Activity: Learners will construct their own hand drums using simple materials. To inspire their design and decoration, they will examine images of authentic African drums and various animal prints, seeing how these patterns and textures are incorporated into the traditional craft
Building a shelter for a helpful creature
We can build homes (shelters) using different materials to keep helpful animals safe so they can help us.
After learning how birds help by eating insects, learners will tackle the "Bird Feeder Construction" challenge: "How can we build a safe house for a bird so it stays in our garden?" Using recycled materials like plastic bottles, they must plan, design, and construct a functional feeder.
Social Science
Animals that work for us
Animals help people do difficult jobs like carrying heavy things or taking us places.
The "Donkey Cart" Role-Play and Model activity asks learners to explore why working animals like donkeys are used for transport, having them role-play pulling supplies with a small cart. They will then build a simple model of the working animal and its equipment (like a harness) using blocks or clay to represent this social function.
Animal are friends and helpers at home
Pets give us love, keep us company, and sometimes protect our homes.
In the "Pet Safety and Care Interview," the class prepares simple questions for a guest who owns a pet (a learner or teacher), such as "What job does your cat do at home?" Following the interview, learners discuss and communicate the responsibilities and values necessary for caring for a companion animal.
