Biology - The Lungs
Structure
thorax
top part of body
diaphragm
dome-shaped flat muscle
contracts and relaxes to cause movement of air in and out of lungs
ribcage
protects organs in the chest
trachea
tube where air travels from mouth/nose to lungs
bronchi
two tubes that lead from trachea into lungs
goes into lung
bronchioles
smaller bronchi tubes to alveoli
alveoli
small air sacs for gas exchange
Alveoli
lungs have millions
blood passing next to alveoli returned to lungs
lots of CO2, little O2
O2 diffuses out of alveolus (high conc.) into blood (low conc.)
CO2 diffuses out of blood (high conc.) to alveolus (low conc.) to be breathed out
when blood reaches cells
oxygen is released from red blood cells (high conc.) to body cells (low conc.)
CO2 diffuses out of body cells (high conc.) into blood (low conc.)
Adaptations
large SA
moist lining
thin walls
good blood supply - steep con gradient
short diffusion distance (1 cell thick)
good ventilation
permeable walls
