Using 地 to form adverbial midifiers
Purpose and function
Converts adjectives or adjectivical phrases into adverbs to modify verbs, indicating manners or degree of action dearly
Links a descriptive modifier directly to a verb, preserving the action-focusing relationship
Implementation details
Use 地 when when an adjective modifies a verb.
Use 地 BEFORE a verb-like descriptive phrases to show how action is performed. (e.g. 高兴地笑 — laugh happily)
Using 得 to link verbs with degree or result complements
Purpose and function
Shows how well or to what extent an action is done.
Shows the result or outcome of an action.
Implementing details
得 (de) is used AFTER a verb or adjective to show how well, to what degree, or whether an action is possible..
It connects the verb with a complement of degree, result, or possibility (e.g. 他跑得快 — “He run fast”).
Distinguishing 的 as a modifier marker and posessive particle
Purpose and function
Marks attributive adjective or noun modifier; links modifier to noun, including quality, identity or possession
Functions as possessive particle when placed between possessor and noun
Implementation details
Use 的 after adjectives or modifier phrases preceding a noun (好的书—a good book)
