Replicate swine carcasses (n = 3) in Midwestern temperate forest habitat (Ohio, USA) in August 2010. Carcasses randomly placed and covered with anti-scavenging cages, with temperature loggers recording the outside temperature every 15 minutes as the carcasses went through each stage (fresh, bloat, active decay, advanced decay, dry)
Samples were taken immediately after carcass exposure and then at 1, 3, and 5 days. Samples were taken from the buccal cavity and the skin and then stored and processed within 12 h of sampling.
