So many stories are told through sewing and attire. Traditional garments are often redesigned and passed down as heirlooms across many generations. For example, my mom got married in a green sari. Years later, she had that same fabric restitched into a two-piece lehenga for me.
Through being a member on UW Junoon (Bollywood fusion dance team), I've reconnected with my culture through the form of movement. Dance is a way for me to celebrate my identity while learning styles and traditions from other communities across India.
When I was younger, most of the history I learned came through songs and "mythical" stories passed down by elders.Sort of a mix of folklore, religion, and culture. I plan to uphold language by passing down the same stories and songs.
I uphold family by keeping photobooks filled of memories of all the important relationships in my life. Each photo has a story behind it.
I uphold tradition through cuisine. Recipes in my family have been passed down through generations. Even the same dish may taste different depending on where you are from. By learning these recipes, I will be able to pass down culture and trradition.
My brother has autism, and growing up, I realized how uncommon and misunderstood that was in society. I constantly advocate for him and others to spread awareness and challenge stigma.
Many of my ancestors, including my grandparents, owned a sugarcane farm as a means of making a living. I uphold this connection by remembering the labor and hardship that go into farmwork and by recognizing the privilege I have to be learning in America.
I learned most religious practices through rituals my mom performs, and I have fond memories of being fascinated by diyas. Seeing/Lighting diyas during festivals reminds me of the values I grew up with and the cultural history that they carry. I uphold these traditions by educating myself about festivals/traditions and continuing to learn more so I can continue participating in these rituals with intention.
I uphold representation by wearing traditional clothes. Sometimes it's not even a fully traditional outfit; it could be a mix of a non-traditional outfit that is complemented by traditional jewelry.
Cows hold a lot of spiritual significance in many Indian traditions, which is why my family is vegetarian. While I do eat beef, I still recognize the cultural values tied to cows, and follow the times in our tradition when eating meat is forbidden out of respect.
