ANIMALS AND CREATURES THAT HELP US
NATURAL SCIENCES
Soil health and decomposition
Learners observe earthworms in a soil jar, sketch tunnels, and discuss how this improves plant growth
Worms recycle waste and improve soil quality (FAO, 2023).
Pollination and plant reproduction;
Learners simulate pollination by using cotton-ball “bees” and coloured powder on paper flowers, then record the results.
Bees move pollen to help plants form seeds and fruit (DBE, 2011; FAO, 2018).
SOCIAL SCIENCES
Community responsibility and values.
Class brainstorm “How can we protect helper animals in our school/community?”
Learners role-play being a farmer, beekeeper, or dog trainer to show how these jobs connect to animals.
Occupations and roles
People must care for animals and show empathy (e.g., guide dogs helping the visually impaired) (SA Guide-Dogs, 2025).
Farmers, beekeepers, and trainers rely on animals to provide food and services (DBE, 2011).
TECHNOLOGY
Bee hotel design
Learners design and draw a simple bee hotel with sticks, cardboard, or paper tubes.
People can design solutions to protect pollinators (Naudé & Meier, 2025).
Worm farm design
Learners plan and set up a small classroom worm farm with food scraps, then monitor changes over time.
Worm farms help recycle food waste into healthy soil (FAO, 2023).
