Language Barriers make it difficult to communicate. Interpreters and translators help bridge the gap
From a patient's perspective do they like the convenience of an interpretor on a device or do they prefer the interaction of a translator?
When not available: can not use family member but in general just provide sufficient time
Suggestions: communicate alternatively, use positive body language, notice difficulty, verify understanding
As a provider: develop and test materials with intended readers. Also adapt for various cultural differences
Our diversity is constantly evolving and healthcare needs to evolve with it
Culture: it really takes getting to know your patient to fully understand with adequate care. this requires patient centered care
If not done correctly, physical harm may happen. Psychosocial harm will also occur leading to various negative emotions, avoidance of healthcare, and poor health outcomes
This reminds me of working in a hospital and being exposed to various translators and interpreters whether that be on the phone, tablet, in person, or video.
