Body Systems - Coggle Diagram
Body Systems
Skeletal system
Bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments
Functions:
Provides support for muscles, protects body and organs, stores minerals, contains bone marrow (important for blood cell development)
Muscular system
Skeletal muscles (bicepts, tricepts), cardiac muscle (heart), smooth muscle (digestive track, urinary bladder, blood vessles)
Functions:
Posture, movement, thermoregulation
Respiratory system
Air passageways (the phraynx), larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, diaphragm, lungs
Functions:
Sound production, Oxygen and carbon dioxide gas exchange with the blood, regulation of acid-base balance
Cardiovascular system
The heart, blood vessels and blood
Functions:
Regulates; water content of body fluids, acid-base balance and temperature of the body (thermoregulation. Pumps blood around the body, delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells, removes metabolic waste
Integumentary system
The skin and associated components (hair, sweat glands, sebaceous, glands and nails)
Functions:
Protects the body from external environment, excretes metabolic waste, produces vitamin D, detection of touch, pain, temperature, change and dehydration
Nervous system
Brain, spinal cord, nerves and special sense organs (eye, ears, nose etc.)
Functions:
Detecting change in the external environment and internal environment (sensory function), integrating incoming information from sense organs with what is already knwon to inform decision making (intgrative function), including a response to the initial sensory stiumlus (motor function)
Lymphatic system
Lymphatic fluid, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, the spleen, lymph nodules, the thymus
Functions:
Development of lymphocytes (cells responsible for fighting disease), transportation of various substances through the body e.g. lipids, protein, fluids
Endocrine system
Pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus gland, adrenal gland, endocrine tissue in other organs
Functions:
Production and release of hormones that alter the metabolism of target cells (spesific or general)
Digestive system
Digestive tracts, oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, organs assisting digestion e.g. salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas
Functions:
Physical and chemical breakdown of ingested food, absoption of nutrients and water, removal of undigested food
(Excretory) / Urinary system
Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra
Functions:
Helps to regulate production of red blood cells, filters blood to extract and remove metabolic waste (therby maintaining the acid-base), maintaining the mineral balance
Reproductive system
(not important for OT)
Penis, testes, prostate gland, uterus, fallopian tube, ovary, vagina, cervix
Functions:
Production of oocytes and sperm, release of hormones that regulate repoduction and development, formation of new life through fertilisation
