comformity : asch’s study & influencing factors
asch's conformity experiment
aim : to investigate whether individuals conform to group pressure, even when the correct answer is obvious.
method : 123 american male students tested in a group of six to eight confederates (actors). two large cards were shown, one with a single standard line and the other with three comparison lines. participants were asked to select the matching line.
results : participant gave the wrong answer 1/3 of the time. 25% of the participants never gave a wrong answer.
conclusion : this shows people are influenced by group pressure.
social factors
group size
the more people there are in a group, the more pressure to conform.
anonimity
when participants could write down answers that were anonymous, conformity was lower.
task difficulty
if comparison lines are more similar to the standard, the task becomes more difficult.
dispositional factors
personality traits
people with low self-esteem or high anxiety may conform more.
confidence
high confidence = less likely to conform.
expertise
more knowledgeable people tend to be less conformist.
evaluation of asch's study
strengths
controlled lab setting = reliable results
clear demonstration of group pressure
replicable methodology
weaknesses
lacks ecological validity
ethical concerns - deception used
sample bias - all male, american participants
cultural differences - conformity can vary across cultures
