Animals and creatures that help us
Natural Science
Sub-topic 1:
Life Cycle of a Chicken
Key Concept:
Chickens hatch from eggs and grow into adult hens and roosters
Activity:
Learners will be provided with picture cards of an egg, an egg hatching, a chick, and a hen. Learners will need to sequence the picture cards by pasting them in the correct order into their workbook. Egg→Egg Hatching→Chick→Hen (Teaching Expertise, 2023).
Sub-topic 2:
Wool as a natural material
Key Concept:
Wool is a natural material that comes from sheep and is used to manufacture warm clothing.
Activity:
The teacher will read and explain to the learners the process of how wool is made. The teacher will then provide the learners with a few different items made from wool like, sweaters, socks, blankets and scarves to pass around the classroom for each learner to feel. The learners will feel the items and write down their observations about how the items feel e.g. softness and warmth. The teacher will then encourage discussion by asking the learners
"Why do we use wool for winter clothes?"
(twinkl, n.d.).
Social Science
Sub-topic 1:
Roles of dogs in communities
Key Concept:
Different kinds of dogs aid people in different ways, such as keeping us safe, leading the blind, identifying threats, and helping individuals with disabilities.
Activity:
The learners will design a poster. Learners will be divided into groups of two. Learners will be provided with A3 paper and drawing materials. The learners will title their poster
"Helper Dogs"
. Each group will draw a picture of a helper dog in its role (e.g., at a gate, with a police officer, guiding a blind person) and label the role. The groups will then present their poster to the class explaining their picture and why dogs are important to us.
Sub-topic 2:
Historical and cultural importance of donkeys and horses
Key Concept:
Over time, transportation and farming methods have changed. Each method (donkeys and horses in the past vs. vehicles and tractors today) has its own pros and cons for people and communities.
Activity:
I will play a video for the learners on how horses were used back in the day and the impact they had on the community (Strange World of Econ, 2017). I will then play another video for the learners on the use of donkeys for farming and transportation (TV3 Ghana, 2017). The class will then be divided into two groups Past families using donkeys/horses vs. Present families using cars/tractors. Each group will argue why their method is better.
Technology
Sub-topic 1:
Beehive design
Key Concept:
Humans design beehives to collect honey safely and protect bees.
Activity:
Learners use the technological design process to build a simple hive using recycled materials and test if bees (toy cut-outs or bee toy) can enter (DIY Crafts, 2024).
Sub-topic 2:
Cooling and transporting milk
Key Concept:
To keep milk from going bad, it needs to be stored in particular containers that keep it cool and avoid spills.
Activity:
I will play the learners a video on milks journey from farm to table (Nevada Dairy Farmers, 2021). Learners design a "milk cooling container" on paper, discussing what materials would keep milk cold e.g., metal or insulation (Dairy Kids, n.d.).
