Pascal's Wager
Pascal
- Not interested in what evidence there is against God's existence (unlike Swinburne and Paley)
- Interested in what is in our interest to believe
- Provides us w/ a prudential reason to believe:
- prudential reason:reason related to our self interest
The Wager
We can't know whether or not G exists; we still need to wager - form some belief on the matter
Forming our belief by thinking about what we stand to gain or lose by believing in God
Suppose God exists:
- If u believe in him -> you gain lots (ticket to heaven)
- If you don't believe: nothing much to lose
=> Weak dominance example: If some option a) makes you at least as well of than the other options available no matter what; and b) better off sometimes, then you should pick it

The watch analogy
the watch seems clearly to have been designed for some purpose; it has evidence of design:intricate mechanisms, bring about a certain result (telling time), etc.
