Internet Terms
Networking: Connected devices that send and receive data
Node: Addressable device on a network
Network Interface Card: Allows the computer to join a network
Network Switches-move messages between nodes in the same network
Network Routers: Connect separate networks
Routers: Their job is direct data packets
Packets are chunks of data with address info
Protocols: Rules for sending/receiving data
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) breaks the data into packets, labels them, and assigns the ports
Internet Protocol (IP): Sender/Receiver Addresses and routes those packets
Packet Routing: How Router directs packets across the network
Path-Sequence of devices from sender to receiver
Computers/Servers/Devices
Computer Servers are powerful computers that serve other computers
File Server: Stores and Manages Files
Web Server: Responds to web page request
Embedded Devices: Specialized computers inside other objects. Example Car or Ring Camera
Computing System: Group of devices/programs that work together
Network Performance
Data Transfer Rate: How fast the data moves between devices
Latency: Travel time for data
Uploading: Sending Data
Downloading : Receiving Data
Network bandwidth: Maximum data that can be sent in a time frame
