Since development depends on the quality of their relationships during the first years of their life, the interaction between educator and child is of the utmost importance.
The most important relationships entered into by the kid are usually with parents, particularly the mom.

Even Freud regarded the mom-child relationship as unique and one that forms the basis for later relationships

- Bowlby's phases of bond evolution.
- Attachment-in-the-making (6 weeks-6/8 months) - Infants begin to show preference. Smiling/quieting occur more to primary caregivers.
- Clear-cut attachment (6/8 months-18/24 months) - Separation anxiety develops. The kids becomes strongly attached to the primary caregiver and protests separation.
- Pre-attachment phase (0-6 weeks) - Infants respond to any caregiver but don't yet show preference for specific people.
- Formation of a reciprocal relationship (18 months+) - Kids begin to understanding parental intentions and adapt their behavior. Communication improves and separation becomes easier.

Ugandan babies spend most of their time in close physical contact with their mothers, who carry them on their backs.

This also plays a part in the formation of the bond, especially if it's accompanied by other factors like the mother's inability to control a "difficult" kid.
These babies seldom cry, don't react when picked up, their language development is sometimes delayed, are often depressive and they show little interest in school contact.

Studies show that these babies who are placed in inadequate childcare centers in their first 12 months are more inclined to shun their mothers and to develop emotional and social problems.
There are indications that a variety of psychosocial factors may also lead to the development of an unsatisfactory bond between mother and kid.
This is because the negative circumstances demand much of the mother's time, energy and attention that she's unable to develop a strong bond.
