Wireless methods of connecting devices
Infrared
Transmits data through infrared light.
Used for:
Remote controls
Connecting peripherals (not so common now)
Transferring data
Sync mobile phone with PC but there are now modern connections that are more popular for syncing
Advantages
Low susceptibility to interference, connects to devices one-to-one, less likely to be interfered with y another device and isn't susceptible to electromagnetic interference
Disadvantages
Requires line of sight to transmit which can be problematic if there are obstacles in the way
Slow data transfer speeds. max is around 4Mbps, much slower than other wireless technologies
Short range, very short distances, max range is around 5 metres
Bluetooth
Uses microwaves to transmit data
Used for:
Connecting peripherals
Used with mobile technology to make a PAN to sync files on mobile devices with PCs
Can connect mobile devices to PC to use mobile broadband (tethering)
Advantages
Low susceptibility to interference, low-grade signal and frequency hopping
Low power consumption, useful for mobile devices that run on battery
Easy to connect devices, fully automated, after set up devices will connect once in range
Disadvantages
Relatively slow data transfer speed. fast than infrared but the max speed is just 2Mbps.
Poor security, partly due to its automatic connection which can allow other to transfer data to your device, has been improved but vulnerabilities can still be exploited
Wi-Fi
Most commonly known, transmits data between computer systems. Become such an important connection method that most devices now have Wi-Fi capability built into them
Used for:
Connect to a WAP to access the internet or to connect wirelessly to a LAN
Can be used to connect our computer to certain peripherals, most notably a printer and sync our computer to a mobile device
Advantages
Relatively large range, range of around 70 meters, very good compared to other wireless technologies
Low-cost installation, inexpensive, compared to a wired network you don't need masses of cabling
Fast data transfer speeds, around 2.5 Gbps (but theoretically capacble of 7Gbps)
Disadvantages
Complexity in set up, need to configure a WAP correctly, can be hard for inexperienced IT users
Security issues, if poorly configured such as not having a complect Wi-Fi key, it can be very vulnerable to hackers
Mobile broadband
Term for 4G/5G internet we access wirelessly through cellular connection. over recent years, there have been increases in speed and prices starting to come down.
Used for:
Access internet on the go
tether devices to PCs
Can purchase mobile broadband dongle that connects or computer via USB in order to gain mobile broadband connectivity
Advantages
Good availability, internet access is almost everywhere. 4G coverage is good in UK and where 4G isn't available, 3G is
Easy to connect, access requires no additional setup or configuration
Disadvantages
Very expensive
Relatively slow, 4G can usually reach around 42 Mbps. however modern 5G connections provide good speeds of around 200Mbps but availability of 5G is still quite limited
