Nocturnal Worsening of Illnesses - Coggle Diagram
Nocturnal Worsening of Illnesses
Asthma
Symptoms: Breathlessness, wheezing, night-time coughing.
Biological Reasons:
Circadian Rhythm: Night-time drop in cortisol affects airways.
Physiology: Slowest breathing rates after midnight reduce gas exchange (O2 in, CO2 out).
Posture: Lying down puts pressure on the diaphragm, especially with reflux or obesity.
Headaches (Cluster & Migraine)
Cluster Headaches ("Alarm Clock Headaches"):
Timing: Often around 2 am.
Severity: Excruciatingly painful.
Migraines:
Often wake sufferers from sleep.
Biological Reason:
Sleep Cycles: Linked to transitions between deep sleep, REM sleep, and near-waking.
Brain Stem: The hypothalamus (in the brain stem) regulates sleep and is involved in migraine origin.
Menopause (night sweats)
Symptom: Waking drenched in sweat.
Cause: Body's inability to regulate temperature.
Biological Reason:
Hormonal: Drop in estrogen affects the hypothalamus (the brain's thermostat).
Sleep State: Being asleep means you are unaware and cannot take corrective action (e.g., removing layers).
Other Conditions Mentioned
Acute Heart Failure
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
Gastric Reflux
Shingles
Bronchitis
Systemic / General Factors
Circadian Rhythm: The body's internal 24-hour clock affects hormone levels and bodily functions.
Hospital Impact: A&E admissions surge after midnight, leading to longer waiting times for patients.
