Thannam - Even though the BNPL service is rapidly growing, along with its usage, there is multiple evidence that suggests that it will be unsustainable and less transformative. First, the users are centered in a narrow segment, which includes the younger generation, higher income, and digitally advanced people, which means that the effect is not covering the whole population (The National, 2022). Second, the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) introduced new regulations regarding the BNPL service, which require the BNPL providers to operate as agents of licensed banks or as restricted-license finance companies and to disclose all fees, repayment terms, and late-payment penalties. These laws may restrict the providers and limit impulse spending (Gulf News, 2024). Moreover, less knowledge of the repayment schedules can result in debt accumulation due to the late fees (Gulf News, 2024). Hence, BNPL may increase spending in certain contexts, but may be less impactful in a broader sense due to the regulations and risk of getting into debt.
