Missionaries - Missionaries attempted to convert Africans to Christianity. They tutored Affonso I as well.

Affonso I - He was the ruler of Kongo in west central Africa. He was against the slave trade and raised his voice against it.
Asante Kingdom - This emerged in the area that is now present-day Ghana. This is the kingdom that Tutu used to try to defeat the neighboring kingdom, Denkyera.
Osei Tutu - Osei Tutu was a military leader in the late 1600s to early 1700s. He won control of the trading city of Kumasi. He then conquered neighboring people, and made the Asante.
Monopoly - A monopoly is the exclusive control of an industry or a business. The government officials chosen by Tutu managed the monopolies on gold mining and the slave trade.
Oyo Empire - This empire arose from waves of settlement by the Yoruba people of what is now Nigeria. This empire started off small, but its leaders used the wealth from the slave trade to make an impressive army. The Oyo empire used this army to conquer Dahomey.
Plantations - Plantations are big estates that are run by an owner or their overseer. Europeans bought a lot of slaves to perform labor on these plantations.
The Boers - This was the name for Dutch farmers. Boers settled around Cape Town, and over time, they killed or enslaved the people who lived there.
Cape Town - Dutch immigrants named Cape Town. They found and named this place when they arrived at the southern tip of the continent. Cape Town was the first European settlement to supply the ships that were sailing to or from the East Indies.
Mombasa & Malindi - Mombasa and Malindi were hubs of international trade. Also, these are both coastal cities that the Portuguese attacked.
