Matter
What is it?
Mixture
Heterogenous Mixture
Colliod
A heterogeneous mixture where tiny, dispersed particles of one substance remain suspended throughout another, and neither dissolving completely
-
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture where large, undissolved solid particles are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas medium
Ex: Muddy water, where soil particles are suspended in water
A type of mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout, meaning its components are unevenly distributed and can be seen as distinct substances
-
Homogenous Mixture
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, where the solute is evenly and uniformly dissolved in the solvent
Ex: Drinks like tea, coffee, and soda
A combination of substances blended thoroughly so that its composition is uniform throughout and individual components are indistinguishable.
Ex: Soft drinks, wine, and sea water
Mixtures are formed when two or more substances are combined physically but not chemically, and they can be classified as homogeneous or heterogeneous
Ex: Lemonade (a homogeneous mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and water)
Pure Substance
-
A form of matter that contains only one type of atom or one type of molecule, resulting in a uniform and constant composition and fixed physical and chemical properties throughout the sample

Chemical Properties
-
Chemical Changes
A transformation that converts one or more substances into new substances with different chemical properties through a process called a chemical reaction.
Ex: The digestion of food, which breaks down food into simpler molecules
A chemical property is a characteristic of a substance that becomes evident only when that substance undergoes a chemical reaction.
-
Physical Properties
Extensive Properties
A characteristic of a substance or system that depends on the amount of matter present, meaning it changes when the size or quantity of the sample changes.
-
Physical Changes
A type of change that alters the appearance or form of a substance without changing its chemical composition or identity, meaning no new substances are created.
Ex: Solid ice turns into liquid water, but it is still H₂O.
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without altering the chemical composition of the substance.
