Hazards in Bulgaria
Earthquakes
Economic Impact: physical destruction of buildings, infrastructure and property, leading to costly reconstruction and loss of business revenue and employment
Health impact: immediate traumatic injuries from collapsing structures, respiratory issues from inhaled dust and debris, psychological trauma is also a risk
Prevention: no way to actually prevent it, but building infrastructure that will be able to withstand it might help with minimizing damage, use of strong, though expensive materials; alerts
Social impact: death, injury, displacement, leading to long-term homelessness and psychological stress; loss of cultural heritage
How: The tectonic plates that make up the Earth's outer shell, are constantly moving, and when they get stuck due to friction, pressure builds up. When this built-up stress overcomes friction, the rocks slip suddenly, releasing stored-up energy as seismic waves that travel to the Earth and cause the ground to shake
Floods
Prevention
keep-up of dams, better city infrastructure, forest protection and planting, early alert, hazard relief training and awareness
Economic impact
produce destroyed, infrastructure damage, capital required, tourism decrease, income loss; long term - obliterates production and interrupts sustaiability
Health impact
contaminated waters, higher risk of epidemic, physical trauma, lack of fresh clean water
Social Impact
people losing homes and property, deaths, stop of school and work, psychological impact, migration
Causes
Strong rainfall, melting winter ice, river overflow, bas dam infrastructure, climate change, drainage issues, forest cut-down
Landslides
Economic impacts: damage to infrastructure, property, and agriculture; agricultural and forest losses; cost of response and mitigation
Health impact: fatalities and injuries, diseases and respiratory issues, mental health
Prevention: Stabilizing slopes, installing retaining structures, maintaining vegetation
Social impact
loss of life and injuries, displacement, isolation of communities, destruction of property, stopping of school, work, and travel, trauma, migration
Causes
heavy rainfall, earthquakes, deforestation, construction, mining, poor drainage
