Progress Made In HISTORY U1
Articles of Confederation
I did not know that these existed, or how the constitution came to be
I never knew much about the beginning of the US and how it started aside from basic concepts of the American Revolution and the colonies.
Not something I thought about previously... somehow I just thought the constitution magically appeared. However this unit showed me a big gap in my historical knowledge.
It was the first system of structure in the United States and was their first sort of "government".
it out lined their laws and government but created a country with very weak power. They didn't have much unity within the different states and was pretty chaotic.
National government couldn't pass taxes, raise and army, or have much of an impact towards foreign countries.
Background of the American Revolution
This is another topic I did not know about. Previously I have only learned about the American revolution and the discovery of the United States. But never learned about the details of the background for what laid ground before the American revolution
Independent Colonies to Royal Colonies
lost salutary neglect - when the colonies could work based on their own laws and just pay taxes to the British
Good for Colonists (more freedom)
Bad for British government
French Indian War 1754
This is when the British colonists fought for land. They beat the French and got the Ohio River Valley. But they now needed to fight with the Native Americans.
British were in debt from the war
Proclamation of 1763 basically told the colonists they were to allowed to move into the Ohio River Valley
Taxation without representation
British wanted to make money to pay debt through taxes
Stamp Act, Tea Act, Quartering Act, Intolerable Act
Oppression and Revolution
Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre
Olive Branch Petition was when the colonists begged the British to trade them as equals ad that if they were the colonists would NOT rebel. However the British said no and that led to war.
This led to the Declaration of Independence
Another big topic I learned about was the process of ratifying the constitution. These conventions were held to convince the American people they needed the constitution. This is something I previously thought wasn't argued about in the past... but I guess everything that happens in the government is debated and disagreed on.
Federalists
for the constitution, wanted a new government and change
bill of rights are already in the constitution
states have have rights during peace time
the more representatives we have the more possibility of factions forming
there will be more war time than peace time and the central government needs to be stronger for protection of the country
Anti Federalists
Wanted to keep the Articles or amend them. Did not want the constitution. Thought it would oppress the people
A representative with many people can't understand their needs
the idea of supreme law will cause issues and oppression
less representatives will lose touch with the people
history has always had a magna carta and should continue to limit the ruler's power
