Chapter 8 – Housing and its Spatial Distribution
Types of Housing
Formal Housing
Built by: Government / private developers (e.g., HDB, private condos in Singapore)
Legal right to occupy land
Access to basic services (water, electricity, sanitation)
High-quality building materials
Informal Housing
Self-built squatter settlements (e.g., Dharavi, Mumbai)
No legal right to occupy land → risk of eviction
Lack of basic services (illegal tapping, unsafe disposal of waste)
Low-quality materials → prone to fire, floods, collapse
Location of Housing in Cities
Formal Housing
On desirable land
Near greenery, amenities, away from pollution
Good infrastructure (roads, water, electricity, waste disposal)
Informal Housing
On undesirable land (landfills, sewage plants, polluting industries)
Near industrial sites / transport lines (save time & cost)
Neglected, poor infrastructure
Factors Affecting Location of Housing
Land-use Planning
Formal: built in designated zones (zoning guidelines)
Informal: can occur anywhere regardless of planning
Developers
Private: choose commercially viable land (profit-driven)
Public (govt): choose based on people’s needs
Informal: near formal housing/industries to tap into infrastructure
