Matter
What is it?
Pure Substance
A single form of matter that contains only one type of atom or molecule. It is uniform and has specific properties.
Real world examples: pure gold, pure iron, pure copper
-
Mixture
Two or more substances that are combined, but they keep their chemical makeup and do not combine. They can be separated.
Real world examples: Saltwater, sand and water, olive oil dressing
Homogeneous Mixture
The components within the mixture are so thoroughly mixed that the mixture looks the same everywhere, even under a microscope.
-
Heterogeneous Mixture
The components are distributed unevenly, making it easy to distinguish the two from each other.
-
Solution
A homogeneous mixture made of two or more substances where the solute is dissolved in the solvent to make the solution.
Real world examples: Saltwater, brass alloy, air
Colloid
A heterogeneous mixture where one substance is dispirsed uniformly throughout. They remain suspended in the substance due to electrical charges.
-
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture where, throughout a liquid or a gas, a solid is dispersed and does not dissolve. They remain visible and settle if left undisturbed

-
Observable characteristics that can be observed or measured. You do not change the chemical makeup of the substance to find out these details.

Chemical Change
A change that alters the chemical composition of one or more substances. They are made into a new substance by forming and breaking chemical bonds
