Ocean acidification can be described as the decrease in the pH of the ocean, and the subsequent increase in acidity, due to the absorption of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide bonds with water molecules to form carbonic acid, which has a chance of releasing hydrogen ions, thus decreasing the pH. As the reaction is reversable, it may also take in hydrogen with carbonate, leaving less carbonate for calcifying organisms.
