Lecture 2 – Additional Systemic & Metabolic Disorders
Hypoparathyroidism
Hypocalcemia → tetany, short stature
Radiographic: Basal ganglia calcification, enamel hypoplasia, delayed eruption
Pancreas / Diabetes Mellitus
Type I: Insulin-dependent
Type II: Insulin-resistant
Leads to periodontitis, caries due to xerostomia
Cushing’s Syndrome
Excess cortisol → central obesity, hypertension
Radiographic: Generalized osteoporosis, premature eruption, lamina dura loss
Osteoporosis
Postmenopausal women most affected
Radiographic: Thin mandible cortex, thin lamina dura
Rickets & Osteomalacia
Deficient Ca/P → enamel hypoplasia, tetany
Hypophosphatasia & Hypophosphatemia
Low ALP or renal phosphate loss → poor bone calcification
Osteopetrosis
Dense brittle bones, anemia, fracture risk
Radiographic: Symmetrical bone opacity, narrow mandibular canal, delayed eruption
Other Systemic Diseases
Sickle Cell Anemia: Hair-on-end skull appearance
Thalassemia: Rodent-like face, marrow expansion
Progressive Systemic Sclerosis: Connective tissue hardening
