Cautious
-
The method does not consider the effect of fatigue, creep or environmental damage mechanisms on either the bolt or flange.
The methodoly adopted assumes that the gaskets being used undergo a reasonable amount (>15%) of relaxation during the initial stages of operation.
Definitions/Concepts
Gasket relaxation
This is a very important phenomenon in flange assembly. It is a gradual loss of the stud load applied after installing the gasket.
-
-
Initial relaxation
The initial relaxation occurs immediately after installation and it is caused mainly by the flow of the gasket when filling in the irregularities between the flanges.
