World War 1
Russians were withdrawing and being captured in large numbers. Losing multiple battles. By 1915, over a million Russian soldiers were deserted from the front.

It was soon clear that Russia wasn't ready. They were inferior to the well prepared, well equipped and well fed soldiers.
The Tsar wanted support from Britain and France. He got money (loans) and he knew withdrawing would cut this off.
It got so bad that they wanted to be shot rather than dying the long, cruel death of war.

28 July 1914- Russia joined war to support allies but she wasn't prepared but the Tsar decided to enter Russia into the war because he realised how unpopular his government had become and how divided the country was. For him joining the war was a means of uniting the people of Russia behind him.

The Tsar believed that the war would be short and that people would support. They did. They rallied behind him. Only a few groups did not support Russia's entry into the war.
Not enough weapons at the front. Three soldiers had to stand behind a gun. 3 soldiers: 1 rifle. Not enough ammunitions. (not enough bullets) Not appropriately dressed- Summer at first then winter came. Soldiers died of hypothermia. No boots (tying rags around their feet)
Not enough food to feed the army. Little farming. Government sent soldiers and Okhrana into the countryside to find food. The peasants already had little- they wanted to feed their familes. --> Peasants held at gunpoint so that they would give soldiers food.
Peasants resisted---> They only had a little, not enough to give.
