Between the 16th and 20th centuries, especially with the population growth of the United States and the colonization of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, English became a common means of communication among different populations, consolidating its role as a global language.

In Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, English became established through trade, imperialism, and colonial administration, also giving rise to pidgins and creoles.
